This work reports the structural and vibrational properties of nanocrystals of corundum-type In2O3 (rh-In2O3) at high pressures by using angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements up to 30 GPa. The equation of state and the pressure dependence of the Raman-active modes of the corundum phase in nanocrystals are in good agreement with previous studies on bulk material and compare nicely with theoretical simulations on bulk rh-In2O3. Nanocrystalline rh-In2O3 showed stability under compression at least up to 20 GPa, unlike bulk rh-In2O3 which gradually transforms to the orthorhombic Pbca (Rh2O3-III-type) structure above 12-14 GPa. The different stability range found in nanocrystalline and bulk In2O3 is discussed.

A highly efficient diastereoselective iron(III)-catalyzed intramolecular hydroamination/cyclization reaction involving - substituted amino alkenes is described. Thus, enantiopure trans-2,5- disubstituted pyrrolidines and trans-5-substituted proline derivatives are synthesized by means of the combination of enantiopure starting materials, easily available from L--amino acids, with sustainable metal catalysts such as iron(III) salts. The scope of this methodology is highlighted in an enantiodivergent approach to the synthesis of both (+)- and (-)-pyrrolidine 197B alkaloids from L-glutamic acid. In addition, a computational study was also carried out to gain insight into the complete diastereoselectivity of the transformation.

We describe the use of biopolymers, such as sodium alginate, as an sustainable
adhesive binder for several metals and high-density polyethylene. A standard
pull test and peel test was performed with disks, made of different material
and size. Adhesive failure was investigated by varying the amount of applied
alginate solution, drying time, drying temperature, effect of surface area, and
the nature of the adherend. Alginate adhesion was remarkably strong, relatively
general, and sensitive to the presence of water. A brief comparison with
other biopolymers is also provided.

Roughening by anisotropic etching of N-face gallium nitride is the key aspect in today’s production of blue and white light emitting
diodes (LEDs). Both surface area and number of surface angles are increased, facilitating light outcoupling from the LED chip.
The structure of a GaN layer stack grown by metal organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) was varied in the unintentionally
doped u-GaN bulk region. Different sequences of 2D and 3D grown layers led to a variation in dislocation density, which was
monitored by photoluminescence microscopy (PLM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Thin-film processing including laser lift off
(LLO) was applied. The influence of epitaxial changes on the N-face etch kinetics was determined in aqueous KOH solution at
elevated temperature. Inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) was used to measure the etch progress
in small time increments with high precision. Thereby, the disadvantages of other techniques such as determination of weight loss
or height difference were overcome, achieving high accuracy and reproducibility.

(S)-2-Stearamidopentanedioic acid (C18-Glu) is a known LMW gelator that forms supramolecular gels in
a variety of solvents. In this work, we have carried out the isosteric substitution of the amide group by
a sulfonamide moiety yielding the new isosteric gelator (S)-2-(octadecylsulfonamido)pentanedioic acid
(Sulfo-Glu). The gelation ability and the key properties of the corresponding gels were compared in
terms of gelation concentration, gel-to-sol transition temperature, mechanical properties, morphology,
and gelation kinetics in several organic solvents and water. This comparison was also extended to (S)-2-
(4-hexadecyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pentanedioic acid (Click-Glu), which also constitutes an isostere of
C18-Glu. The stabilizing interactions were explored through computational calculations. In general,
Sulfo-Glu enabled the formation of non-toxic gels at lower concentrations, faster, and with higher
thermal-mechanical stabilities than those obtained with the other isosteres in most solvents.
Furthermore, the amide-sulfonamide isosteric substitution also influenced the morphology of the gel
networks as well as the release rate of an embedded antibiotic (vancomycin) leading to antibacterial
activity in vitro against Staphylococcus aureus.

In this paper we analyse the ways in which a variety of myths belonging to the Greek mythological universe of the Averno, most of them exhibiting triadic structures, have been reinterpreted in the Medieval Literature after their assimilation and dissemination through the Latin Literature. In addition, we establish the different functions, according to the intentions of the different authors, whereby such myths were re-written in some Medieval French texts, especially of didactic or moral character, in which the myth of the Averno was christianised by incorporating images and symbols used by the Medieval interpreters. These reinterpretations became essential in the configuration and consolidation of the imagery of Hell as an instrument for coercive persuasion and submission of believers.

The outcome of photosensitized [2+2]-cycloaddition reactions
of various cinnamates has been compared in different reaction
media, including homogeneous organic solutions under inert
conditions, degassed water, and aerated physical gels. The
reactions were performed under LED blue light (λmax=455 nm)
irradiation and [Ir{dF(CF3)ppy}2(dtb-bpy)]PF6 (1.0 mol%) as photocatalyst.
The processes were optimized taking into consideration
solvent, gelator, and substrate. Comparative kinetics
analyses, as well as the effect of the reaction media on the
diastereoselectivity of the process, were evaluated during this
investigation. In a number of cases, carrying out the reaction in
a less polar solvent, like toluene or highly polar solvent, like
water had a tremendous impact on the diastereoselectivity of
the process, pointing towards an effect on the stabilization of
the putative diradical intermediate in this medium. Moreover,
while for reactions run in homogeneous solution oxygen needs
to be excluded, no erosion in yield is observed when the
photoadditions were run in aerated gel media.

A pH-sensitive polymer based on the poly(styrene- alt -maleic anhydride) co-polymer serves as basis to develop a microextraction method (pH-HGME) in direct combination with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and fluorescence detection (FD) for the determination of seven organic com- pounds, including three polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), three monohydroxylated PAHs and one alkylphenol, in urine. The method bases on the structural modification of the pH-sensitive polymer in the aqueous sample at a high pH value, followed by the formation and insolubilization of a hydrogel contain- ing the preconcentrated analytes by decreasing the pH, and the direct injection of the hydrogel-rich phase in the HPLC-FD system. The optimization of the main variables permitted the selection of low amounts of aqueous sample (10 mL), which was mixed with 10 mg of co-polymer also present in a low volume (150 μL) of concentrated NaOH. The method further requires the addition of 200 μL of concentrated HCl, 3 min of stirring, and 15 min of centrifugation. This pH-HGME-HPLC-FD method presented low limits of detection, ranging from 0.001 μg L −1 to 0.09 μg L −1 in ultrapure water, average relative recoveries of 96.9% for the concentration level of 0.60 μg L −1 , and enrichment factors between 1.50 and 17.7. The pro- posed method also exhibited high precision, with intermediate relative standard deviations lower than 16% for a concentration level of 0.60 μg L −1 . The developed pH-HGME-HPLC-FD method performed ade- quately when analyzing two human urine samples provided by a non-smoker male and a smoker female, respectively. One of the target analytes (2-hydroxynaphthalene) was quantified in both samples using the standard addition method, with a predicted concentration of 7.3 ±0.4 μg L −1 in the non-smoker male urine and 19.3 ±0.6 μg L −1 in the smoker female urine.

Zircon-type HoPO4 and TmPO4 have been studied by single-crystal x-ray diffraction and ab initio calculations. We report information on the influence of pressure on the crystal structure, and on the elastic and thermodynamic properties. The equation of state for both compounds is accurately determined. We have also obtained information on the polyhedral compressibility which is used to explain the anisotropic axial compressibility and the bulk compressibility. Both compounds are ductile and more resistive to volume compression than to shear deformation at all pressures. Furthermore, the elastic anisotropy is enhanced upon compression. Finally, the calculations indicate that the possible causes that make unstable the zircon structure are mechanical instabilities and the softening of a silent B1u mode.

Shape memory polymer actuators have attracted great attention in the past few
decades for developing soft robots, artificial muscles, and biomedical implants,
among others. Herein, under a tutorial perspective, a series of shape memory
actuators that display unidirectional movement upon exposure to specific
external stimuli is explored. The mechanistic details associated with the
movement of each system are also highlighted. In general, an overview of basic
design principles, the chemical structure of molecular switches, the strategies
used to achieve such controlled and unidirectional movement, as well as key
experimental aspects, is provided. The most critical challenges of the existing
devices that limit their practical applicability are also discussed. This is of utmost
importance because such limitations must be overcome to fabricate micromotors
that can generate complex movements, other than simple stretching/contraction
or bending, to perform complex tasks.

Currently, evolution of chemical transformations by visible light irradiation is highly desirable from cost,
safety, availability, and environmental friendliness points of view. Besides, activation of less reactive substrates
under very mild conditions becomes one of the most challenging tasks in organic synthesis.
However, the insufficient energy provided by one photon of visible light for their activation definitely
makes necessary the development of new protocols together with the design of new photocatalytic
systems to overcome this limitation. In this context, the implementation of biphotonic processes has
been found to be a solution for these drawbacks. This new mechanistic paradigm which combines light
upconversion processes with energy/electron transfers holds great potential for high energy demanding
bond activations, expanding the accessible reactivity window. Here, we wish to highlight the recent applications
of biphotonic processes in organic synthesis.

High-pressure Raman-scattering measurements and ab initio calculations on NdVO4 have been carried out up to 30 GPa. Our combined experimental and theoretical study confirms that beyond 5.9 GPa NdVO4 undergoes an irreversible zircon to monazite transition. The coexistence of zircon and monazite phases is experimentally observed up to ~8 GPa (which agrees with the theoretical transition pressure), stabilizing the monazite phase as a single phase around 10 GPa. Calculations additionally predict the existence of a second high-pressure phase transition at 12.4 GPa. This reversible phase transition has been experimentally observed beyond 18.1 GPa and remains stable up to 30 GPa. The post-monazite phase is predicted to have a monoclinic structure isomorphic to the BaWO4-II type structure. The calculated structure for the three polymorphs of NdVO4 is reported and the pressure dependence of their Raman modes is discussed.

Hydrogels derived from biopolymers, also called biohydrogels, have
shown potential for brain injury therapy due to their tunable physical, chemical,
and biological properties. Among different biohydrogels, those made from collagen
type I are very promising candidates for the reparation of nervous tissues due to its
biocompatibility, noncytotoxic properties, injectability, and self-healing ability.
Moreover, although collagen does not naturally occur in the brain, it has been
demonstrated that collagen type I, which resides in the basal lamina of the
subventricular zone in adults, supports neural cell attachment, axonal growth, and
cell proliferation due to its intrinsic content of specific cell-signaling domains. This
chapter summarizes the most relevant results obtained from both in vitro and in vivo
studies using self-healing biohydrogels based on collagen type I as key component
in the field of neuroregeneration.

The recent demand for fluorescent labeled materials
(FLMs) in forensic security concepts such as latent fingerprints (LFs)
that encodes information for anti-counterfeiting and encryption of
confidential data makes necessary the development of building new
and innovative materials. Here, novel FLMs based on Polyhedral
Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes (POSS) functionalized with fluorophores
via “click” reactions have been successfully synthesized and fully
characterized. A comprehensive study of their photophysical
properties has displayed large Stokes’s shift together with good
photostability in all cases, fulfilling the fundamental requisites for any
legible LF detection on various surfaces. The excellent performance
of the hetero-bifunctional FLM in the visualization of LF is emphasized
by their legibility, selectivity, sensitivity and temporal photostability. In
this study, development mechanisms have been proposed and the
overall concept constitute a novel approach for vis-à-vis forensic
investigations to trace an individual’s identity.

The microscopic mechanism accounting for the self-healing attribute of aromatic ionene-forming hydrogels
derived from 1,4-diazabicyclo [2.2.2]octane (DABCO) and N,N’-(x-phenylene)dibenzamide (x = ortho-/meta-/
para-) is unknown. Interestingly, the self-healing property of such DABCO-containing hydrogels is largely
dependent on the polymer topology, the ortho ionene being the only self-healable without adding oppositely
charged species. In this work, Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations have been conducted to evaluate the influence
of the topology on ionene⋅⋅⋅ionene and ionene⋅⋅water interactions, as well as their effect on the selfhealing
behavior. For this purpose, destabilized and structurally damaged models were produced for ionene
hydrogels with ortho, meta and para topologies and used as starting geometries for simulations. These models
were allowed to evolve without any restriction during MD production runs and, subsequently, the temporal
evolution of ionene⋅⋅⋅ionene and water⋅⋅⋅ionene interactions was examined. Analysis of the results indicated that
the ortho-isomer rapidly forms unique interactions that are not detected for other two isomers. Thus, in addition
to the interactions also identified for the meta-and para-ionenes, the ortho-isomer exhibits the formation of strong
intermolecular three-centered (N–)H⋯O (=C)⋯H (–N) hydrogen bonds, intramolecular planar sandwich π-π
stacking interactions and Cl- ⋅⋅⋅N+ electrostatic interactions. Furthermore, the amount of intermolecular π-π
stacking interactions and the strength of water⋅⋅⋅polymer interaction are also influenced by the topology, favoring
the stabilization of the ortho-ionene reconstituted hydrogels. Overall, the arrangement of the functional
groups in the ortho topology favors the formation of more types of ionene⋅⋅⋅ionene interactions, as well as
stronger interactions, than in the meta and para topologies.

The optical absorption of CdWO4 is reported at high pressures up to 23 GPa. The onset of a phase transition was detected at 19.5 GPa, in good agreement with a previous Raman spectroscopy study. The crystal structure of the high-pressure phase of CdWO4 was solved at 22 GPa, employing single-crystal synchrotron x-ray diffraction. The symmetry changes from space group P2/c in the low-pressure wolframite phase to P21/c in the high-pressure postwolframite phase accompanied by a doubling of the unit-cell volume. The octahedral oxygen coordination of the tungsten and cadmium ions is increased to [7]-fold and [6+1]-fold, respectively, at the phase transition. The compressibility of the low-pressure phase of CdWO4 has been reevaluated with powder x-ray diffraction up to 15 GPa, finding a bulk modulus of B0=123 GPa. The direct band gap of the low-pressure phase increases with compression up to 16.9 GPa at 12 meV/GPa. At this point an indirect band gap crosses the direct band gap and decreases at −2 meV/GPa up to 19.5 GPa where the phase transition starts. At the phase transition the band gap collapses by 0.7 eV and another direct band gap decreases at –50 meV/GPa up to the maximum measured pressure. The structural stability of the postwolframite structure is confirmed by ab initio calculations, finding the postwolframite-type phase to be more stable than the wolframite at 18 GPa. Lattice dynamic calculations based on space group P21/c explain well the Raman-active modes previously measured in the high-pressure postwolframite phase. The pressure-induced band gap crossing in the wolframite phase as well as the pressure dependence of the direct band gap in the high-pressure phase are further discussed with respect to the calculations.

Arene regioisomerism in low-molecular-weight gelators can be
exploited as a tool to modulate the micro-structures of the
corresponding xerogel networks by using the three different
possible substitution patterns ortho, meta and para. This
aromatic regioisomer-driven strategy has been used with a
cholesterol-based gelator to prepare hollow self-assembled
organic nanotubes (S-ONTs) with inside and outside diameters
of ca. 35 and 140 nm, respectively. Electron microscopy imaging
and theoretical calculations were employed to rationalize the
formation mechanism of these S-ONTs. From the three possible
regioisomers, only the ortho-disubstituted cholesteryl-based
gelator showed the optimal angle and distance between
substituents to afford the formation of the cyclic assemblies
required for nanotube growth by assembling 30–40 units of the
gelator. This study opens fascinating opportunities to expand
the synthesis of controllable and unique microstructures by
modulating geometrical parameters through aromatic regioisomers.

In this study, different ratios of mucin-grafted polyethylene-glycol-based microparticles
were prepared and evaluated both in vitro and in vivo as carriers for the oral delivery of insulin.
Characterization measurements showed that the insulin-loaded microparticles display irregular
porosity and shape. The encapsulation efficiency and loading capacity of insulin were >82%
and 18%, respectively. The release of insulin varied between 68% and 92% depending on the
microparticle formulation. In particular, orally administered insulin-loaded microparticles resulted in
a significant fall of blood glucose levels, as compared to insulin solution. Subcutaneous administration
showed a faster, albeit not sustained, glucose fall within a short time as compared to the polymeric
microparticle-based formulations. These results indicate the possible oral delivery of insulin using
this combination of polymers.

Biobased tractable films consisting of blends of chitosan (CS) with polymer bearing carbazole derivatives as
pendant groups and fluorene-thiophene as donor-acceptor units (referred to as DA) were prepared, and their
optical, morphological and photocatalytic properties were studied. DA was dissolved in tetrahydrofuran (THF)
and mixed with an acidified aqueous solution containing chitosan to obtain chitosan/DA (CS/DA) films by
solution casting. The fabricated biobased films were characterized using spectroscopic techniques (FT-IR and
UV–vis), thermogravimetry, mechanical assays, contact angle analysis, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The
effects of varying DA compositions and the results of exposure to visible-light irradiation of the films were also
analyzed. The results indicated the existence of interactions between chitosan and DA and a potentially profitable
light-driven response of these biobased films. This behavior was reflected in the optical, topographical,
and contact angle properties of the films, which exhibited different characteristics before and after visible-light
exposure. Finally, the photocatalytic performance of the biobased films was tested via the decomposition of
methyl orange (MO), as a reaction model system. Our results revealed a significant photocatalytic activity
(according to biobased film composition, approximately 64 % and 87 % of methyl orange were degraded under
continuous visible-light irradiation for 120 min) of the films which is attributed to the combined presence and
synergetic effects of the film-forming ability of chitosan and the photoproperties of DA.

Etching of gallium nitride is a key step in the production of blue and white
light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Etching in aqueous KOH solution creates a rough
surface on the LED chip to facilitate outcoupling of the photons generated,
drastically increasing the resulting LED’s efficiency. Compared with the common
technique of dry etching, wet-chemical etching using aqueous KOH solution
has significant advantages, e.g., lower complexity and cost and less remaining
surface damage. An in-depth analysis of the molecular etch reaction by characterization
of the reaction products is reported. The mechanism identified
explains the cause of anisotropic etching, which leads to the formation of
hexagonal pyramids. The concept of hydroxide repulsion by protruding NH
and NH2 groups established in the literature is adapted and further developed.
The susceptibility of several polar, semipolar, and nonpolar crystal facets may
also be explained, as well as the commonly observed increase in average pyramid
size over etch time.

The largely demand in continued security issues makes necessary the development of novel materials with
outstanding properties to improve the current detection techniques. In this context, latent fingerprint (LF) by
fluorescent labeled materials (FLM) is one of the most attractive personnel identification methodologies. Here,
two FLM based on polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanohybrids labeled with dansyl chromophores
have been synthesized and fully characterized. Their photophysical properties have confirmed that these materials
clearly possess the prime qualifications as suitable LF sensing platforms. In fact, they adequately detect LFs
on glassy surface with excellence legibility.

In general terms, the "impact" of tourism refers to the imprint that the tourist, tourism, and its associated infrastructures leave on an environment that has been converted into
a destination. As anthropologists, we are interested in analyzing a specific aspect of these impacts, even though it
can hardly be isolated from the whole: the changes in and
interrelations of actors in concrete situations.
This article tries to emphasize these encounters (considered
as obligations, negotiation processes, or ludic elements), which will occasion the diverse ways in which the sociocultural impact of tourism shows itself, generating, as whole, perfectly articulated identities capable of realizing
themselves at the rhythm imposed by the touristic system. Far
from considering that this activity perverts the populations and
cultures in which it is developed, these demonstrate their great capacity for adaptation in the exploitation of a
new resource, the tourist.

The international AKTEA conference “Women in fisheries and aquaculture: lessons from the
past, current actions and dreams for the future”, that took place from 10–13 November 2004 in Santiago de Compostela (Spain), brought together over 175 persons from 26 countries from all parts of the world, including fisherwomen, fishers' wives, shellfish gatherers, shellfish farmers, social and natural scientists, civil servants, social workers, politicians, fish sellers and processors. It created a forum where these diverse groups of women and men were ...

Since the introduction of the Green Analytical Chemistry guidelines, there has been an increasing
concern on the sustainability of sample preparation approaches, particularly if considering they
constitute the most time-consuming step of the analytical method and the main source of laboratory
wastes. Among the alternatives explored, it is important to highlight the miniaturization of the extraction
methods, which has been accompanied by the seek of greener solvents and sorbents. Biopolymers
emerge as potential candidates to be used as sorbents in microextraction schemes given their biodegradability,
versatility, and easily functionalization. This review offers an overview on biopolymers
(chitosan, cellulose, alginate, and agarose) in sorbent-based microextraction approaches, paying attention
to the preparation of the sorbent and the format in which biopolymers are incorporated into the
sorbent/device, thus implying a specific microextraction approach, their role in the resulting sorbent
material, and the reported analytical applications, covering environmental, food, and bioclinical analysis.

efectos no deseados.
