Matemáticas, ingrediente de película

Abstract

Este artículo analiza la presencia y la visión de las matemáticas en el cine. Se comentan diversos aspectos de varias películas que tratan sobre algún tema matemático o bien contienen algún matemático como protagonista. Nuestro objetivo no es dar un listado exhaustivo de películas. Para la selección llevada a cabo, hemos primado el uso pedagógico que se hace del cine como representación cercana de las matemáticas, de los matemáticos o de su importancia. Se sobreentiende que ninguna de las películas elegidas pretende alcanzar objetivos matemáticos a través del cine, sino más bien ofrecer una visión de esta disciplina y de algunas de sus cualidades. Las películas aquí consideradas van desde clásicos como Extraños en un Tren o Vértigo, hasta cintas recientes como La Habitación de Fermat, Los Crímenes de Oxford o la aún inédita Ágora. Se comentan no sólo películas bien conocidas por el público en general, como Una Mente Maravillosa, Enigma o El Indomable Will Hunting, que reflejan la pasión de sus protagonistas por las matemáticas; sino también cintas más desconocidas como Cube, Moebius o Primer, que plantean un reto matemático como parte del argumento.

This paper analyzes the presence and vision of Mathematics in the cinema. It provides comments on diverse aspects of several movies that either deal with some mathematical topic or contain some mathematician as main role. Our objective is not to give an exhaustive list of movies. In order to carry out the selection of films, we have valued the pedagogic use of the cinema as close representation of Mathematics, of mathematicians or of its importance. It is remarkable that none of the chosen films tries to reach mathematical goals through the cinema, but rather to offer a vision of this discipline and of some of its characteristics. The movies here considered range from classic films as Strangers on a Train or Vertigo, to recent films such as La Habitación de Fermat, The Oxford Murders or the unreleased Agora. This paper includes not only very well-known movies such as A Beautiful Mind, Enigma or Good Will Hunting, which reflect the passion of their main roles for Mathematics; but also more unknown films such as Cube, Moebius or Primer, which outline a mathematical challenge as part of the plot.
