The Ward de Gideon Mendel: fotografiando la humanidad en torno a pacientes con sida en un hospital londinense

Abstract

En 1993 el fotógrafo Gideon Mendel se adentró en la primera sala de un hospital dedicada a enfermos de sida, en el Reino Unido, donde llevó a cabo un proyecto innovador. Consciente de que algo especial estaba ocurriendo en dicho lugar, tomó imágenes de muchos pacientes, arropados por sus seres más allegados y el personal del centro. Unas imágenes de lucha que rompieron barreras y prejuicios hacia el infectado por VIH, contribuyendo a erradicar el estigma que provocaban en gran parte de la sociedad. Dentro de un género que floreció durante los años más duros de la pandemia, el autor aportó una nueva mirada, a modo de testimonio del infectado, inmortalizando la humanidad y el amor entre los retratados. Las imágenes desgarradoras que componen este trabajo, bajo el nombre de The Ward, supusieron un reto para Mendel, profesional comprometido con los dramas que asechan a nuestra sociedad.

In 1993, Gideon Mendel spent several week photographing patients at the first dedicated Aids ward in a hospital in UK, where carried out an innovation project. Aware of something special was happening in these place he photograhed many patients, assisted by their next of kin and centre staff. An important images for demands in order to remove the varrieres and prejudices that HIV infected cause on the society. Within a genre that flourished during the hardest years of the pandemic, Gideon beared a different point of view, as testimony of the infected, focused on the humanity and love between the portayed. The borrowing images that make up this project named The Ward, were a challenging task for Mendel, photographer compromised by the dramas that haunt our society.
