RT info:eu-repo/semantics/article T1 The Expression of Attitude in Translatio A1 Munday, Jeremy K1 appraisal theory, attitude, graduation, intensifi cation, interpreting, translation AB Th is paper applies appraisal theory to the study of translation and interpreting. It discusses earlier work on lexical expression of attitude in specifi c genres of advertising and public notices and in simultaneous interpreting. Th e question of graduation and intensifi cation is central. A case study analysis of a speech from the European Parliament shows that graduation is more prone to variation, both upscaled and downscaled, in simultaneous interpreting than in written translation. Th is raises certain hypotheses about the relation between mode and evaluation and stage of text production and evaluation. Th e paper ends with a call for these to be tested in future interdisciplinary research PB Universidad de La Laguna.
