AB Medicinal plants have been used since time immemorial to treat diseases or to reducethe symptoms that they cause. In recent years, the use of medicines by the populationhas grown considerably, for this purpose the use of natural plants in various formats hasbeen increasingly recommended for mild cases. Plants are a source of secondarycompounds widely demanded in the pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic industries. However, these products are found in very low concentrations making their extractionand purification difficult and expensive. Elicitation through different biotic and abioticstress factors constitutes an able alternative of increase the concentration of these highlydemanded secondary metabolites. Next, several genera and species of medicinal plantsdescribed in the Canary Islands are studied, among them we find the genus Hypericum,Artemisia and Rumex. In addition, a phytochemical review is carried out to determinethe presence of the secondary metabolites responsible for its pharmacological action andthe existing elicitation studies that allow us to increase the yield and production of thesecondary compounds of the aforementioned genera are verified.
