AB The insistence on the inseparability of poetics and politics as articulatedby Adrienne Rich and Audre Lorde, two powerful voices inlesbian-feminist poetry and criticism, represents a significant contributionto twentieth-century poetry. The poetics/politics of Lorde andRich represents movement from silence to speech and from lesbianinvisibility to woman-identification as a basis for poetry, and ultimatelycreates a lesbian poetry that has the power for personal andsocial transformation. Although queer theorists have tended to rejectlesbian-feminism as an essentialist and totalizing discourse, advancementin any of these three areas remains a significant achievement inpoetry and politics.
