Análisis filosófico de la eugenesia liberal

Abstract

El concepto de eugenesia hace referencia a aquel movimiento social cuyo propósito era la mejora de la especie humana por medio de la intervención en la herencia genética y reproducción. Este concepto fue acuñado en el año 1883 por el antropólogo británico Francis Galton. Tras el Holocausto y el fin de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el concepto de eugenesia cayó en declive y en el descrédito. Sin embargo, a finales del siglo XX, comenzó a surgir una nueva forma de eugenesia conocida como eugenesia liberal, en la que los progenitores tienen la libertad de elegir si quieren una futura descendencia modificada genéticamente o no. Esta tesis doctoral tiene como objetivo analizar filosóficamente esta nueva eugenesia, con el fin de averiguar si esta puede ser éticamente aceptable o no. Para este fin se analizará el origen y desarrollo de la eugenesia, el significado y objetivos de la eugenesia liberal, las tecnologías de mejora, las políticas en esta nueva eugenesia, y diversas críticas en contra. El trabajo concluirá con un posicionamiento y unas consideraciones finales.

The concept of eugenics refers to that social movement whose purpose was the improvement of the human species through the intervention in genetic heritage and reproduction. This concept was created in 1883 by the British anthropologist, Francis Galton. After World War II and the Holocaust, the concept of eugenics fell into decline and discredit. Nevertheless, at the end of the XX Century, a new form of eugenics started to emerge. It was liberal eugenics. This notion refers to a new kind of eugenics in which future parents have the freedom to decide if they want to genetically modify their future offspring or not. The aim of this doctoral thesis is a philosophical analysis of this new eugenics, and to determine if liberal eugenics could be ethically acceptable or not. For this purpose, the origin and development of the notion of eugenics, the meaning and purposes of liberal eugenics, the enhancement technologies, the politics in this new eugenics, and several critics against it, will be analyzes. This thesis will conclude with a positioning, as well as some final considerations.
