El «loco vuelo» de los hermanos Vivaldi en 1291

Abstract

Este estudio se propone reunir todo lo que se conoce del viaje realizado por los hermanos genoveses Vivaldi en 1291, quienes se propusieron llegar ad partes Indiae. A pesar del fracaso de la expedición, el recuerdo de este increíble intento movilizó la imaginación europea durante siglos y bien podría colocarse a la misma altura que otras navegaciones que tuvieron éxito, como la de Colón en América, o las circunnavegaciones de África y de Sudamérica realizadas por Vasco da Gama y Magallanes doscientos años más tarde. Desafortunadamente, las pocas referencias históricas encontradas hasta ahora no han permitido reconstruir de manera precisa esta aventura, e incluso en varias ocasiones han llevado a la elaboración de teorías sin fundamento. Gracias a la presentación de algunos documentos que son publicados por primera vez, este estudio va a analizar las diferentes hipótesis propuestas por los historiadores en los últimos dos siglos y va a demostrar la inexactitud de algunas y la genialidad de otras.

This study aims to gather all that is known about the voyage made by the Genoese brothers Vivaldi in 1291, who set out to reach ad partes Indiae. Despite the failure of the expedition, the memory of this amazing attempt mobilized the European imagination for centuries and it could be perfectly placed at the same height as other navigations that were successful, such as Columbus’ in America, or the circumnavigations of Africa and South America carried out by Vasco da Gama and Magallanes two hundred years later. Unfortunately, the few historical references found to date have not allowed us to accurately reconstruct this adventure, and even on several occasions they have led to the development of unfounded theories. Thanks to the presentation of some documents published here for the first time, this study will analyse the different hypotheses proposed by historians in the last two centuries and it will demonstrate the inaccuracy of some and the brilliance of others.
