The grammaticalisation in Latin of the gender opposition animate (=
masculine/feminine) versus inanimate (= neuter) is not only a well-assured
fact, but also a legacy of the so-called «common Indo-European». The aim of
this paper, however, is to examine some of the peculiarities of Latin regarding
the morphological characterization of the above opposition. The approach
taken follows the guidelines that the late professor Díaz Tejera had prepared
for Greek, and which can be found in the articles cited.
