El patrimonio en piedra. Necesidad de recuperación de las canteras locales.

Abstract

El presente estudio analiza algunos ejemplos significativos de patrimonio ornamental en villas históricas de Tenerife y de Gran Canaria, observando la gran variedad de tipos de piedras volcánicas utilizadas y buscando su relación con canteras del entorno, Observamos cómo la selección de los materiales viene determinada, además de por el criterio estético imperante en la época, por la cercanía de las canteras y la evolución de la red viaria y del transporte marítimo. Se señala la necesidad de recuperar las canteras locales con un doble objetivo: para atender las necesidades de restauración de los elementos patrimoniales y, por otro lado, para propiciar la inclusión de estos materiales en las obras nuevas, facilitando así el mantenimiento de un valor asociado a la identidad de la zona.

The present study is using as examples some significant assets of the ornamental heritage, situated in Tenerife or Gran Canaria. We can see the great variety of volcanic rocks historically used and look at its relationship with the quarries of the place. We analyze how the material selection is determined by the aesthetic main stream at the moment and also determined by more peculiar circumstances like: the proximity of the quarries, the development of the roads and of the maritime transport, the efficiency level of the available tools in every kind of material and the level of formal detail those tools allow. In this study we may see the influence of the use of the stones inside the environment over the time in the creation process of an unique patrimonial landscape, as well as the necessity of recovering the local quarries with an dual objective: first one to attend the heritage restoration and the second one is to propitiate the incorporation of those materials in the new stone work, making easier the maintenance of the important elements associated with the personality of the zone.
