Teorías y referencias sobre el semen femenino en la literatura griega medieval

Abstract

This paper deals with the controversy between those who affirmed the existence of female semen and those who denied it within the medieval Greek literature. From the seventh century until the late Middle Ages there was a clear interest in the matter. The three most important authors of our work have been Michael of Ephesus, Theophilus Protospatarius and Joannes medicus. We owe the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae the computerization of the texts of all the authors used, as well as many others in which we have not found anything related to our objective. Certainly, the already large number of authors and texts of the Middle Ages collected in this extraordinary lexical and computerized tool will be expanded considerably in the near future, so it can be said that this work offers a provisional state of the matter on the aforementioned controversy and shows the way to future researchers.

Este trabajo aborda, en la literatura griega medieval, la presencia de la polémica suscitada entre quienes afirmaban la existencia del semen femenino y los que negaban la misma. Desde el siglo vii hasta finales de la Edad Media hubo un interés manifiesto por la cuestión. Los tres autores más importantes para nuestro trabajo han sido Miguel de Éfeso, Teófilo Protospatario y Juan Médico. Le debemos al Thesaurus Linguae Graecae la informatización de los textos de todos los autores utilizados, así como de otros muchos en que no hemos hallado nada relacionado con nuestro objetivo. Con toda seguridad, la ya nutrida nómina de autores y textos de la Edad Media recogidos en ese extraordinario medio léxico e informático se irá ampliando considerablemente en un futuro próximo, con lo que puede decirse que este trabajo recoge un estado provisional sobre la citada polémica y muestra el camino a futuros investigadores.
