Desempleo y ciclo económico en España. Un análisis de la heterogeneidad a nivel autonómico

Abstract

In 1962, Arthur Okun empirically analysed the relationship between production volume and unemployment in the United States. Since then, several researchers have done studies in other economies, highlighting the differences between them. In line with this literature, this report seeks to verify, first, whether this relationship is also present in Spain, and second, to analyse its degree of heterogeneity at the regional level and its degree of cyclical asymmetry. For this, the specification of the model in differences proposed by Okun was used, with quarterly data for the period between 2002 and 2018.The results obtained suggest that the "Okun Law" is fulfilled in Spain and that, among the autonomous communities, there are heterogeneous behaviours, as well as within each region depending on the economic cycle.

En 1962, Arthur Okun analizó empíricamente la relación existente entre el volumen de producción y el desempleo en Estados Unidos. Desde entonces, diversos investigadores han hecho estudios en otras economías, remarcando las diferencias entre ellas. En línea con esta literatura, en esta memoria se busca comprobar, primero, si en España se da también esta relación, y segundo, analizar su grado de heterogeneidad a nivel regional y su grado de asimetría cíclica. Para ello, estimamos la especificación del modelo en diferencias planteado por Okun, con datos trimestrales para el período comprendido entre 2002 y 2018. Los resultados obtenidos sugieren que sí se cumple la “Ley de Okun” en España y que, entre las comunidades autónomas, existen comportamientos heterogéneos, así como dentro de cada región en función del ciclo económico.
