Viajeros musulmanes: origen y desmitificación de creencias medievales

Abstract

The activity of the maritime traffic carried out by Muslim merchants since the eighthcentury fostered the rise of literary genres that accounted for the expeditions and findings of these travellers: the so called «wonderful accounts». The practice of pilgrimage, on the other hand, also explains the emergence of a series of treatises which included not only mythological motives but also reliable information, such as cartographic elements. This article deals with the most relevant authors of these different accounts and gives special attention to the motive of the rukhkh bird.

A partir del siglo VIII, el dinamismo del tráfico marítimo de los mercaderes musulmanes propició el surgimiento de una serie de géneros literarios que daban cuenta de las expediciones y hallazgos de los viajeros: los llamados relatos de maravillas. Asimismo, la práctica de la peregrinación dio lugar a otra serie de tratados, que incluían motivos mitológicos, a la vez que incorporaban información fidedigna, como la cartográfica. Este artículo glosa las figuras más relevantes en los diversos tipos de relatos y dedica especial atención al motivo del pájaro rukhkh.
