Gargantúa en el folclore medieval francés: la prehistoria de un mito literario

Abstract

This article analyses the first records containing the names Gargantua and Pantagruel. The pre-sixteenth century popular legend of the benevolent giant, Gangantua, which still persisted in nineteenth and twentieth century French folklore, is studied together with the diverse hypotheses accounting for his origin. As for the other main character in Rabelais’s saga, Pantagruel, also prior to the sixteenth century, this work presents him as non-existent in French rural legends.

Se analizan las primeras documentaciones de los nombres de Gargantúa y Pantagruel. Se estudia la leyenda popular, anterior al siglo XVI, del gigante benefactor, Gargantúa, que todavía persistía en el folclore francés de los siglos XIX y XX, y se consideran las hipótesis emitidas acerca de su origen. Se comprueba que, en cambio, el nombre del personaje central de la saga de Rabelais, Pantagruel, también anterior al siglo XVI, está totalmente ausente de las leyendas rurales francesas.
