Esclerosis múltiple y embarazo: pautas de tratamiento y viabilidad

Abstract

La esclerosis múltiple es una enfermedad autoinmune, inflamatoria y desmielinizante que afecta al sistema nervioso central, caracterizada por la aparición de lesiones sobre las fibras nerviosas y la mielina. Es una enfermedad crónica y progresiva, que la convierte en la enfermedad más desmielinizante en la actualidad. Se trata de una enfermedad con gran variabilidad, por lo que la llaman la enfermedad de las mil caras. Actualmente no existe un tratamiento eficaz que pueda curar o enlentecer la evolución de la enfermedad, y los fármacos disponibles no tienen efecto sobre las lesiones ya establecidas. La esclerosis múltiple afecta principalmente a mujeres jóvenes, por lo que está íntimamente relacionada con la maternidad. Debido a este motivo, el objetivo de esta revisión es esclarecer los datos existentes hasta la fecha sobre la viabilidad del embarazo en estas pacientes, los efectos que se producen tanto en el embarazo como en la propia enfermedad, los tratamientos disponibles y los protocolos existentes en los diferentes hospitales de Tenerife

Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune, inflammatory and demyelinating disease that affects the Central Nervous System, creating injuries on nerve fibers and the myelin surrounding axons. This chronic and progressive disease is the most usual among demyelinating diseases. Multiple Sclerosis takes a wide range of forms, which is why it is known as “the thousand faces disease”. There´s no treatment at the present time that can cure or stop this disease. Furthermore, currently available medicines have no effect on the existing injuries caused by it. Young women are the main target group of MS; that´s the reason why it is closely related to maternity. As a result of that, this review is focused on: the current data regarding the viability of pregnancy in female MS patients, the effects of the disease both in and out of pregnancy, the range of treatments available and the existing protocols in Teneriffe´s hospitals.
