Abstract

La exploración exhaustiva de la identidad nacional que gran parte de los autores escoceses emprende en la década de los ochenta contrasta con el intimismo de la primera novela de Janice Galloway, publicada en 1989. Este artículo estudia las técnicas experimentales em- pleadas en The Trick Is to Keep Breathing para poner de manifiesto las contradicciones inhe- rentes a la red de códigos que determinan la identidad en nuestros días. Examinaremos cómo Galloway trasciende estos mensajes a través de la representación del cuerpo de su narradora, así como mediante las continuas transgresiones a las normas textuales.

In a decade when many Scottish writers were concerned with an exhaustive exploration of their identity, Janice Galloway’s acclaimed first novel, The Trick Is to Keep Breathing (1989), offers an intimate portrayal of a particular experience that transcends the constrains of collective definition. This paper concentrates on the experimental narrative techniques used by Galloway in order to reveal the artificially woven codes that condition our identities. We will explore the strategies Galloway uses to uct the messages inscribed on the body of her female narrative voice, as well as her constant transgression of textual patterns.
