Hacia una nueva ortografía fonológica en la lengua inglesa a mediados del siglo XIX: las ideas de Mariano Cubí y Soler

Abstract

El presente estudio se centra en la intervención del prestigioso gramático y lexicógrafo anglista Mariano Cubí y Soler en el gran debate abierto en la primera mitad del siglo XIX en torno a la conveniencia o no de reformar la ortografía inglesa (y también la española) según simplificadores criterios de inspiración fonológica. Para ello, expondremos las principales ideas del autor a la hora de defender una peculiar ortografía simplificada, práctica y adaptada a la pronunciación con el fin de facilitar el aprendizaje del inglés para anglófonos y no anglófonos. Propuestas que serían recogidas en un manual básico de ortografía (Nuevo Siste- ma), aparecido en Bath (Inglaterra) en 1851 y revisado por el innovador gramático I. Pitman.

The present paper attempts to explore the role that the 19th-century prestigious grammar- ian and Anglist Mariano Cubí played in the great debate on the orthographic reform of the English (and Spanish) language, and especially in his so-called Nuevo sistema published in Bath (England) in 1851, and revised by the innovative grammarian I. Pitman. In this way, the challenge of this study will consist of highlighting the author’s contribution to this phonological-based orthographic reform, and his main ideas about how to adapt orthogra- phy to pronunciation to simplify the learning of the English language for both its native and non-native speakers.
