Los videojuegos en la enseñanza de segundas lenguas

Through games human beings learn and get to know the world around them. As a tool that transmits knowledge and culture, videogames offer endless possibilities in education and, when incorporated into the curriculum, favor the acquisition of multiple competences, among which the linguistic stands out, key in the teaching of English as a second language. This research focuses on the use of commercial video games as a didactic tool and reflects on the possibilities offered beyond entertainment. For this, a survey was conducted to 25 participants of 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students of ESO of the IES María Rosa Alonso on the use of videogames and the perspective of learning second languages. The aim of this study was to know if students learn through video games, which genre is the most efficient for the acquisition of second languages and if motivation to learn languages increases when playing videogames. The results showed and evidenced our initial hypothesis: the majority of students use video games on an everyday basis and are aware of language learning when communicating with other players or through the story and narrative of the game itself which they will still find motivating even when subtitled in English.
