El turismo en Cataluña: evolución histórica y retos de futuro

Abstract

En este artículo se presenta, de una manera sucinta, la historia, situación actual y principales retos de futuro del turismo en Cataluña. Cataluña, como región, es el primer destino turístico de España en número de visitantes e ingresos globales. Sus especiales características geográficas y socio-culturales hacen además de Cataluña un interesante laboratorio para el estudio de la evolución del turismo en el sur de Europa. Por una parte, con la Costa Brava, principalmente, y la Costa Dorada, ha sido un destino clásico para el turismo de sol y playa. Por otra parte, la montaña y, especialmente su amplia cabecera pirenaica, ha fomentado también el desarrollo de un turismo hivernal, que ha tenido su máxima expresión en la estación de Baqueira-Beret, y ha permitido que se implantaran el turismo rural y el turismo de aventura. El turismo cultural, finalmente, que siempre ha contado con alicientes complementarios como la ciudad romana de Tárraco, el emplazamiento greco-romano de Ampurias, singularidades como Montserrat o la obra de Dalí, Picasso, Miró... ha despegado con gran potencia en Barcelona, a partir de la reconversión y promoción de la ciudad que representaron los Juegos Olímpicos de 1992. Todo ello hace del turismo un sector clave en Cataluña, en torno al cual se producen debates de gran trascendencia, no siempre, quizás, con el rigor que sería necesario. Por eso nos parece oportuno ofrecer esta visión panorámica, que, en sus modestas pretensiones, permita a los estudiosos de otras latitudes disponer de algunas informaciones básicas al respecto.

This article features, in a brief introduction, the history, present situation and main future challenges of tourism in Catalonia. Catalonia, as a region, is the first tourist destination in Spain according to the number of visitors and total income. Its particular geography and socio-cultural characteristics turn Catalonia into an interesting laboratory for studying the evolution of tourism in South Europe. On one hand, Costa Brava, mainly, and Costa Dorada have been a classical destination for ‘sun and beach’ tourism. On the other hand, its mountains and, above all the wide Pyrenean range have also promoted the development of winter tourism, which has reached its peak in Baqueria-Beret winter sports resort, and has forwarded the introduction of country tourism and adventure tourism. Cultural tourism, finally, which has always counted on complementary incentives such as the Roman city of Tarraco, the Greco- Roman archaeological site of Ampurias, the singularities of Montserrat or the works of Dalí, Picasso, Miró… has strongly taken off in Barcelona since the last restructuring and promotion of the city, because of the Olympic Games in 1992. All these facts make tourism a key sector in Catalonia, around which momentous debates take place, not always, perhaps, with the needed strict criteria. That is why we feel convenient to offer this panoramic view, which in its modest scope, may allow scholars in other parts of the world to have some essential information on this matter.
