Patrimonio cultural como factor de desarrollo territorial resiliente en áreas rurales. El caso de Mértola (Portugal)

Abstract

El patrimonio cultural es considerado hoy como uno de los pilares fundamentales del desarrollo urbano ‑territorial de áreas con un legado histórico especialmente valioso. Así, la reciente eclosión del turismo cultural ha favorecido la proliferación de estudios sobre cómo este contribuye a un mejor nivel socioeconómico y cultural de los habitantes de lugares patrimoniales, especialmente en grandes urbes monumentales y ciudades medias históricas. Este trabajo pretende evaluar este efecto en un área rural que conserva un acervo patrimonial que se extiende al conjunto de un territorio polinuclear alejado de los grandes polos turísticos: la villa de Mértola (Portugal) y los asentamientos de su concejo. Combinando el análisis del caso, la cartografía territorial y la toma de datos, se pone en cuestión cómo la valoración y difusión de determinados elementos patrimoniales puede activar, a través del desarrollo profesional y el turismo cultural sostenible, procesos de resiliencia en destinos patrimoniales remotos.

Cultural heritage is currently considered to be a basic cornerstone of urban ‑territorial development within areas in possession of a valuable historical legacy. Thus, the recent blossoming of cultural tourism has favoured the proliferation of research on how this process contributes to the social, economic and cultural well ‑being of the inhabitants of said cultural heritage sites, mainly centring on major monumental cities though, more recently, on medium ‑sized historical cities. This work aims at assessing the effect of valorisation of cultural heritage in a rural area far from the major tourist attractions in Portugal and covering an area consisting of many different sites, in the area of Mértola). Through combined case analysis, with territorial cartography and data management, this work examines how the enhancement and diffusion of certain heritage elements professionally developed toward sustainable cultural tourism may activate resilient processes in remote heritage destinations
