Abstract

En las últimas décadas se ha venido hablando con frecuencia del dominio de la imagen en la sociedad contemporánea. El siglo XX fue descrito por teóricos y expertos como el siglo de la imagen, más concretamente se habló de la sociedad de la imagen, y el siglo XXI probablemente seguirá haciendo honor a dicho calificativo. Durante este tiempo el retrato ha pasado de ser un género más entre los que venían ordenando la historia de las representaciones, a materializar una obsesión compulsiva característica del hombre contemporáneo. Las explicaciones de este hecho son diversas, pero todas dejan entrever la escasa confianza del ser humano en la memoria que, precisamente, él mismo pretende perpetuar apareciendo en las imágenes que crea.

During the last decades, there have been a lot of discussions about the dominant role that the image has played on our contemporary society. The twentieth century was described by authors and experts as the century of the image, or even more precisely, as the image society. During this current century, our civilization will probably continue to honour this adjective. Portrait is no more a simple category in art history, but a compulsive obsession of contemporary men. There are many explanations for this, but all of them somehow show a lack of confidence of human being in its own memory; and it is precisely such memory that men pretends to preserve by appearing in the images that they create.
