Abstract

Históricamente, el valor del trabajo de muchas mujeres científicas no se ha reconocido en toda su valía. Éste es el caso de Nettie Maria Stevens, una bióloga extraordinaria que realizó una contribución realmente sustancial a la genética teórica. Publicó aproximadamente cuarenta artículos científicos, siendo su mayor contribución a la ciencia la demostración de que el sexo está determinado por cromosomas particulares. E. Wilson, el mejor citólogo en aquel tiempo, estaba investigando sobre el mismo problema (1905). A menudo, el descubrimiento le ha sido adjudicado a él, a pesar de que la cuestión de prioridad se ha discutido recientemente. Historically women scientist have not been properly acknowledged for their work. This is the case of Nettie Maria Stevens, an extraordinary biologist who certainly made a substantial contribution to theoretical genetics. She published approximately forty scientific papers, and her greatest contribution to science was the demonstration that sex is determined by a particular chromosome. E. Wilson, the master cytologist at that time (1950), was doing research on the same topic. Although he is often credited with this discovery, the question of priority has been recently raised. However, from the study of the dates of the work, it is apparent that they both arrived at the same conclusions quite independently.
