To be or not to be: la ansiedad de la androginia en Virginia Woolf

Abstract

En este texto se rinde homenaje a la obra pionera de Virginia Woolf por su denuncia del encasillamiento génerico y a su reivindicación, a través de la escritura, de la androginia como forma de desestabilizar la injusta esterotipia de lo femenino y lo masculino. La creatividad literaria de Woolf presagió numerosas interpretaciones feministas y postmodernas respecto al modelo heredado de sujeto. Orlando y Las Olas son las obras elegidas para ejemplificar que la llamada «política de la identidad» es rechazada desde el discurso de la ambigua androginia que propone Woolf.

This paper highlights the insights Virginia Woolf pioneered. Her work not only challenged gender stereotypes but the author’s vindication of androgyny offered a way to destabilise delimiting depictions of both the feminine and the masculine. The literary creativity of Woolf presaged the feminist, including its postmodern version, questioning of conventional concepts of subjectivity. The work of Woolf, especially Orlando and The Waves, allows us to address the problematic of so-called «identity politics».
