El mar en la mitología de los bimbaches

Abstract

El presente estudio analiza tres versiones sobre un mito de retorno recogidas en el siglo XVI, conservado entre la población aborigen de El Hierro. Mediante la confrontación de los datos contenidos en estos relatos con las características del medio insular y marítimo, se plantea la posibilidad de una primera ocupación de la isla para emprender el retorno. Se sugiere, además, cómo las expectativas de salida de este medio insular, que transmitió este mito a lo largo de las generaciones, dejó marcada su influencia en el carácter, actitudes y proceso cultural de esta población hasta la llegada de los conquistadores en 1403.

The NE trade winds difficults sailing from El Hierro (located in the southwest corner of the Canary Archipelago) to the other islands and/or to the neighbouring continents. There are some chroniclers reports which suggest that the prehispanic population of El Hierro (bimbaches) considered themselves as prisoners in the island, and believed that somebody, with superior culture and capability would rescue them in the future and bring them back to their original homeland. This may explain why they accepted without resistance to be captured by conquerors and sailors who arrived at the island searching for slaves. The relation between this belief and archaeological remains and rock carvings are discussed.
