Angélologie et démonologie à Byzance: formulations théologiques et représentations populaires

Abstract

Based on a particularly rich textual and iconographical documentation, the present work consists essentially in the presentation of certain fundamental Byzantine literature texts that are little or ill-known. The ascetic literature of the first four centuries is the basis on which both the popular representations and the theological formulations are built in the domain of angelology and demonology. For the demonology, our study is mainly based on the Life of saint Anthony, and we refer to the fundamental theological text by John Damascus, a text by Michael Psellos and late Byzantine and post Byzantine texts, while we used Ph. Koukoules’ and Th. Provatakis’ research work. For the study of angelology, our interest has mainly been directed towards the hymnography and the text of the Holy Liturgy.

Fondé sur une documentation textuelle et iconographique particulièrement riche, ce travail se borne essentiellement à la présentation de certains textes fondamentaux de la littérature byzantine peu ou mal connus. La littérature ascétique des quatre premiers siècles constitue la base sur laquelle seront construites aussi bien les représentations populaires que les formulations théologiques en matière de démonologie et d’angélologie. Pour la démonologie notre étude s’est fortement appuyée sur la Vie de Saint Antoine, et a fait appel au texte théologique fondamental de Jean Damascène, à un texte de Michel Psellos et à des écrits plus tardifs. De même, nous avons exploité les recherches de Ph. Koukoulès sur les croyances populaires et celles de Th. Provatakis sur les représentations iconographiques. Pour l’angélologie notre intérêt a porté aussi sur l’hymnographie et le texte de la Divine Liturgie.
