Ángeles y demonios, sus iconografías en el arte medieval

Abstract

This contribution intends to approach the iconographic evolution of the image of angels and devils through the medieval Christian art. Given the generic extension of the topic —that has been even broadened to the representation of the habitat of angels and devils as well as to certain iconographies of synthesis (like that of the Last Judgement)— we have opted to do a general approach where the greater number of motifs related to the topic are dealt with or, at least, mentioned. Even so, it is necessary to point out that in the section from the specific artistic references used we have opted to restrict most of the examples to Western medieval art, leaving references to the Byzantine world to underlie those iconographies that show significant disparities

Esta contribución intenta aproximar la evolución iconográfica de la imagen de los ángeles y los demonios a través del arte cristiano medieval. Dada la genérica extensión del tópico –en la que la representación del hábitat de los ángeles y demonios se ha dado a través de ciertas iconografías de síntesis (como la del Juicio Final)—, hemos optado por hacer una aproximación general donde los distintos motivos, al menos, queden mencionados. Ha sido necesario señalar referencias artísticas específicas y restringir los ejemplos al arte medieval occidental, dejando las referencias al mundo Bizantino.
