Lucernas decoradas con la imagen de una rana en el yacimiento de Oxirrinco, El-Bahnasa, Egipto

Abstract

Las excavaciones realizadas en la necrópolis cristiano-bizantina del yacimiento arqueológico de Oxirrinco (El-Bahnasa), Egipto, han permitido sacar a la luz una gran cantidad de tumbas-pozo, así como diversas criptas. Entre los objetos aparecidos hay que destacar un tipo de lucernas con una decoración en relieve de una rana. Estas lámparas, características del País del Nilo y datadas entre finales del siglo II y comienzos del V d.C., están asociadas a la inmortalidad y al renacimiento a una nueva vida.

Excavations at the Christian-Byzantine necropolis discovered within the archaeological site of Oxyrhynchus (El-Bahnasa), Egypt, have revealed a large number of shaft type tombs and several crypts. Among the objects found there, one that deserves special attention is a type of lamp with the relief decoration of a frog. These lamps, which are unique to the Nile Valley and date from the end of the 2nd century through the beginning of the 5th century AD, are associated with immortality and rebirth.
