Del espíritu de la época

Abstract

Una de las mejores descripciones y definiciones del Romanticismo la llevó a cabo William Hazlitt en su libro El espíritu de la época. Si alguien hiciera un análisis semejante en relación con la teoría y la praxis de la posmodernidad, no sería una gran sorpresa el averiguar que algunos de los nombres que vienen a la mente de cualquiera han sido atacados durante los últimos años no tanto por sus ideas sino por lo que representan. Sería un error suponer que todos los nombres representan las mismas cosas. Cuando parece ceder el furor por la teoría, puede que sea un buen momento para examinar esos nombres que mejor representan el espíritu de la posmodernidad.

We owe to William Hazlitt’s The Spirit of the Age one of the best known descriptions and definitions of Romanticism. If anybody would like to make a similar analysis in regard to postmodern theory and praxis it might not be a great surprise to find out that some of the names that immediately come to mind to many people have under persistent attack in the past years not so much for their ideas but rather for what they represent. It would be a mistake to take for granted that all names represent the same things. As the furore for theory seems to abate, it seems to be high time to assess which are those names that best represent the spirit of postmodernity.
