Abstract

El Kudrun es un poema épico alemán del siglo XIII, afín al Cantar de los Nibelungos. Poco conocido fuera del espacio centroeuropeo, el poema es interesante para comprender mejor el significado y la función de la épica en el contexto de la sociedad medieval. El presente artículo analiza algunas de las etiquetas utilizadas por la crítica para delimitar el género: épica «heroica», «oral», «popular» y «nacional». Todas ellas acusan un fuerte sesgo. Por ello es necesario tener en cuenta una quinta categoría para aprehender la esencia de este tipo de poesía: la dimensión histórica.

The Kudrun is a 13thcentury German epic akin to the Nibelungenlied. Not well known outside German-speaking countries, this poem is interesting to gain insight into the meaning and function of epic poetry in the context of medieval society. The article analyses different tags used by modern scholars to stake out the genre: «heroic», «oral», «popular» and «national epic». All of them have a strong bias. Therefore it is necessary to take into account a fifth category to understand the essence of this kind of poetry: the historical dimension.
