Terapias para dejar de fumar y efectividad del cigarrillo electrónico

Abstract

El tabaquismo es la primera causa de enfermedad y muerte prevenible en el mundo. Para hacer frente a este problema de salud pública se han desarrollado distintas terapias tanto psicológicas como farmacológicas. Recientemente surge el cigarrillo electrónico como un posible tratamiento. El objetivo general de este proyecto de investigación, es determinar si el uso del cigarrillo electrónico como terapia para dejar de fumar es más eficaz que otras ya existentes y aprobadas por el Servicio Canario de Salud. Se trata de un trabajo de investigación cuasiexperimental, longitudinal y prospectivo, que se llevará a cabo en el ámbito de la Atención Primaria de Tenerife (Canarias, España), con una duración de 28 meses. Para ello, la muestra (n=100) que ha sido seleccionada de manera aleatoria entre las personas fumadoras (≥ 10 cigarrillos/día durante ≥ 5 años) que acuden habitualmente a su Centro de Salud y cumplen con los criterios de inclusión, se dividirá en cuatro grupos que se expondrán a un método diferente para dejar de fumar (bupropión, vareniclina, terapia de remplazo nicotínico y cigarrillo electrónico). La investigación constará de tres fases: 1) Selección de la muestra y recogida inicial de datos: sociodemográficos, hábitos tabáquicos, presencia de enfermedades relacionadas con el tabaco y apoyo social, 2) Recogida de datos vinculados a la eficacia de las terapias y los efectos relacionados con su consumo, y 3) Obtención de información relativa al grado de cumplimiento del tratamiento y el nivel de satisfacción. Los tratamientos además irán acompañados de terapias cognitivo-conductuales individuales y colectivas para maximizar su eficacia.

Smoking is the biggest cause of preventable illness and death across the world. To cope with this public health problem, different pharmacological treatments and psychological therapies have been developed. Recently the electronic cigarette appears as a possible treatment. The main objective of the research project presented here is to determine whether the use of electronic cigarette as smoking cessation therapy results more effective than other already existing and approved by the Canary Islands Health Service. It is a quasi experimental, longitudinal and prospecive research work that will take place within the Primary health care of the island of Ternerife (Canary Islands, Spain) with twelve months length. For that pourpose, the simple (n= 100) that has been randomly selected among smokers ( - 10 cigarettes per day during five years) who regularly attend their Health-care centre and satisfy the inclusión criteria, will be divided into four groups that will be exposed to a different method to quit smoking (bupropion, varenicline, nicotine replacement therapy and electronic cigarette). The investigation will consist of three stages. 1) Selection of the sample and initial: sociodemographic, smoking habits , presence of tobacco related illness and social support data collection. 2) Data collection related to effectiveness of therapies and the effects related to its use .3 Information concerning the degree of compliance of the treatment and the level of satisfaction. The treatments will also be accompanied by individual and group cognitive behavioural therapies to maximise their effectiveness.
