The nursing profession requires a daily and direct contact with the patients, on
occasions this relationship may affect the health and the personal and work development.
This is called Burned worker syndrome or Burnout syndrome. It’s formed by three
dimensions: Emotional exhaustion, Depersonalization and difficulty for Personal
Accomplishment.
The nurses that attend a cancer patient must deal with the process of the illness,
death, intense emotions and others stressful effects, which increases their predisposition
to wear down at a personal and professional level, and it’s expressed with behaviors that
affect the individual, the organization and the patients in a negative way.
The primary aim of this project of research is to explore the Burnout Syndrome
and its dimensions in nursing professionals through the departments of Radiotherapy,
Hospitalization and Oncology Day Center of the University Hospital of the Canary
Islands. To carry this out, a quantitative, descriptive and traverse methodology study is
proposed, and a sample constituted by all the nursing professionals that form such units.
For the data collection of the variables of this study, a self-administered questionnaire
will be used that includes sociodemographic features of the sample and the scales of
conflict, role ambiguity, and structural and psychological empowerment as
organizational variables. The study dependent variable is the burnout measured with
Maslach & Jackson’s MBI.
The conclusions of the study will allow the detection of exhaustion levels of the
personnel that deal with cancer patients as well as knowing the role that the working
conditions have in the burning process, in order to promote the implementation of future
programs aimed at preventing the development of the syndrome within this group, as well
as organizational intervention strategies that help to improve the health of professionals,
the quality of healthcare and the effectiveness of the organization.
