La emigración canaria a Santo Domingo en los siglos XVII y XVIII.

Abstract

El presente trabajo constituye un estudio de la emigración que realizaron los canarios hacia el Santo Domingo español durante los siglos XVII y XVIII, con el objetivo de resaltar la importancia que tuvo este proceso en la historia de ambos territorios. Para ello, analizaremos las diferentes circunstancias que propiciaron dicha emigración, tanto en el archipiélago canario como en la isla de Santo Domingo; la labor de los emigrantes canarios en Santo Domingo, desde la fundación de pueblos hasta su papel en el impulso de la economía; y finalizaremos con un balance de los resultados de dicha emigración.

The present paper constitutes a study of the emigration that the Canarians made towards the Spanish Santo Domingo during the 17th and 18th centuries, with the goal of highlighting the importance that this process had in the history of both territories. To achieve this, we will analyse the different circumstances that led to this emigration, both in the Canary archipelago and on the island of Santo Domingo; the work of the Canarians immigrants in Santo Domingo, from the founding of towns to their role in boosting the economy; and we will finish with a balance of the results of said emigration.
