Duel (El diablo sobre ruedas), de Steven Spielberg, y la épica postmoderna

Abstract

Duel, de Steven Spielberg, inspirada en un relato de Richard Matheson, es una película en la que es posible apreciar una mezcla de diferentes géneros cinematográficos: thriller, road movie, fantasía, terror y wéstern. El presente artículo pretende aportar una nueva categoría que venga a englobar los rasgos de los diversos tipos de películas que se pueden identificar pero que, al mismo tiempo, también muestre la intención del argumento de la obra dentro del contexto sociohistórico en el que se encuadra. Dentro de los posibles géneros, el wéstern es uno de los que pueden cumplir esa función catalizadora pero, además, Duel muestra rasgos de diferentes subgéneros del wéstern, dentro de la idea postmoderna de pastiche. En cuanto al argumento, el largometraje plantea una reflexión sobre diferentes aspectos de la vida contemporánea a los que el ciudadano norteamericano se tenía que enfrentar. Por todo ello, se defenderá la idoneidad de considerar a esta película como una épica postmoderna.

Steven Spielberg’s Duel, based on a short story by Richard Matheson, is a film in which it is possible to notice a mixture of different film genres: thriller, road movie, fantasy, horror and Western. This paper aims to provide a new category which includes the features of the diverse types of films which can be identified but that, at the same time, shows the intention of the plot of the film within the sociohistorical context in which it is framed as well. Among the possible genres, the Western is one of those that can fulfill this catalytic function but, moreover, Duel shows features of different Western subgenres, within the postmodern idea of pastiche. As for the plot, the film sets out a reflection on different aspects of contemporary life that the North American citizen had to face. For all this, it will be defended the suitability of considering this film like a postmodern epic.
