Un canon para la Literatura Inglesa como materia universitaria en España

Abstract

Hoy en día asistimos a un proceso de revisión crítica sobre lo que la literatura inglesa debe significar para la universidad española, así como qué criterios deben seguirse cuando se planifica un currículo general para esta disciplina. Se analizan, pues, en el artículo cuestiones básicas para la construcción de dicho canon, tales como qué es literatura, qué se entiende por literatura inglesa (¿británica, del Reino Unido, escrita en lengua inglesa..?), qué es literario o no, qué generos deben estudiarse, así como acercamientos diacrónicos y sincrónicos a la materia.

Nowadays, there is a process of critical revision about what English literature means to the Spanish Universitary system, as well as the criteria that must be employed when planning a curriculum for this subject matter. Basic notions for the construction of the canon are analysed in this essay, taking into account the meaning of literature in general, what to include in English literature in particular (if British, United Kingdom or literature written in English, among other possibilities), what is literary or non-literary, what genres should be studied, and diachronic and synchronic approaches to the matter.
