El Voyage d'Espangne de Guillaume Manier (1736) o la peregrinación jacobea como excusa

Abstract

En el presente trabajo se desea mostrar que la aventura de la peregrinación a Compostela emprendida por Guillaume Manier en 1726 y reflejada en la obra Voyage d’Espangne, escrita por él mismo en 1736, fue algo más que un viaje piadoso. Pudo ser más bien el pretexto y también el fundamento necesario para satisfacer otras inquietudes, diferentes de la puramente religiosa, tales como el ansia de conocimiento de otros lugares y otras gentes, el ejercicio de la lectura y la escritura o el deseo de ofrecer al lector la enseñanza de su propia experiencia viajera. En definitiva, Manier parece hablar en su relato de varios viajes a la vez, todos ellos fuente de sabiduría: el propiamente físico y geográfico; el interior, constituido por los actos de leer y escribir, y, en última instancia, el viaje en el tiempo a lo largo de la vida.

This essay attempts to show that the pilgrimage to Compostela undertaken by Guillaume Manier in 1729, an adventure he described in his Voyage d’Espangne in 1736, was much more than a journey of religious faith. I argue that religion could be the pretext, also the justification, to fulfil Manier´s other pursuits, such as knowledge of other places and peoples, the desire to read and write, and the eagerness to offer the reader the teachings achieved in his own travelling experience. Manier includes in his narrative many different journeys, all of them source of wisdom: the physical and geographical journey itself, also, that of the soul in transit, a path made up of the acts of reading and writing and, eventually, our journey through life.
