Turismo comunitario en el Caribe hondureño: el caso de las comunidades de East End y Chachahuate

Abstract

El turismo comunitario en Honduras es incipiente, no obstante, algunas localidades garífunas en la costa caribeña, han vislumbrado este nuevo modelo de gestión turística como una fuente alternativa de ingresos a la pesca artesanal, que ha menguado notablemente en los últimos años. El objetivo de este trabajo fue analizar los emprendimientos turísticos de base comunitaria, centrado en su origen, funcionamiento, principales retos y situación actual en los poblados de East End y Chachahuate. Se aplicaron entrevistas a actores claves y se realizó observación no participante entre noviembre y diciembre del 2018 y en agosto del 2019. Se determinó que las iniciativas turísticas en ambos destinos han obtenido resultados positivos, pues además de generar renta para las familias involucradas, parte de los beneficios se han orientado, especialmente, al apoyo para la educación de los más jóvenes; sin embargo, se identificó limitado soporte gubernamental, escasa articulación con operadores turísticos y falta de capacitación.

Community-based tourism in Honduras is incipient; however, some Garifuna localities on the Caribbean coast have seen this new model as an alternative source of income to artisanal fisheries, which has significantly diminished in recent years. The main goal was to analyze the community-based tourism ventures, focusing on their origin, functioning, main challenges and current situation in the East End and Chachahuate communities. Key actors interviews and non-participant observation were conducted between November and December 2018 and in August 2019. It was determined that the tourist initiatives in both destinations have obtained positive results, besides generating income for the families involved, part of the benefits have been oriented especially to support the education of the youngest; however, limited government support, poor articulation with tour operators and lack of training were identified.
