Tueris-Oxirrinco. La diosa protectora de Per-Medyed

Abstract

La antigua ciudad de Per-Medyed, situada en el XIX nomo del Alto Egipto, tomó el nombre de Oxyrhynchos en época griega. Durante el período Grecorromano la divinidad femenina primordial de esta localidad fue la diosa Tueris, relacionada con la llegada de la inundación, y encarnada en dos peces, el oxirrinco, de la familia Mormyridae, con quien estaba vinculada, y el lepidoto. El pez oxirrinco aparece siempre en el yacimiento adornado con una corona hathórica, símbolo de la divinidad femenina, y en estrecha relación con la diosa Tueris. Se representa en decoraciones pictóricas de tumbas, templos, cartonajes, estelas, sarcófagos y pequeñas esculturas de bronce, que aparecen con frecuencia dispuestas sobre un trineo. Aunque estas estatuillas suelen ser anepigráficas, en algunas ocasiones llevan una inscripción demótica en el zócalo, sobre el que descansa el trineo, que siempre alude a la diosa Tueris, con fines de protección y de renacimiento a una nueva vida. Las noticias más antiguas que tenemos sobre el culto de dicho animal en Oxirrinco vienen de la mano de autores clásicos como Estrabón, Heródoto o Plutarco. Los papiros localizados en el yacimiento mencionan la existencia de un templo principal y de otros secundarios dedicados a Tueris, y de otro, dedicado al oxirrinco, e incluso, hacen referencia a una congregación de sacerdotes que cumplían los rituales específicos de este culto.

The ancient city of Per-Medyed, located in the 19th nome of Upper Egypt, was called Oxyrhynchus in Greek times. During the Graeco-Roman period, the main female divinity of this locality was the goddess Taweret , who was associated with the arrival of the flood and was represented by two fishes, the oxyrhynchus (Mormyridae family), with whom she was linked, and the lepidot. On this site, the oxyrhynchus fish always appears adorned with a Hathor crown, the symbol of feminine divinity, and closely related to the goddess Taweret. Iconographically, it is represented in tombs, temples, cartonnage, stelae, sarcophagi and also in small bronze sculptures, which very often appear arranged on a sledge. Although these statuettes are usually anepigraphic, sometimes they have a demotic inscription on the plinth, on which the sledge rests, which always alludes to the goddessTaweret , for the purpose of protection and rebirth to a new life. The oldest attestations we have of the cult of this oxyrhynchus fish in Oxyrhynchus, comes from classical authors such as Strabo, Herodotus or Plutarch. The papyri found on the site mention the existence of one main temple as well as a secondary temple dedicated to Taweret, and another one, dedicated to the oxyrhynchus, and they even refer to a congregation of priests who fulfilled the specific rituals of this cult..
