Nowadays, the teaching of Latin in compulsory education in the Canary Islands is
being developed under certain cultural, social, and historical parameters that have devalued the importance of this discipline in the current educational offering. Young people
are sometimes inspired by their families and environment and, therefore, they choose
their formal training considering the job market instead of their own personal growth.
Accordingly, Humanities are losing their relevance in society, and those students who
study this field fail to see any career applicability.
This final project introduces a pedagogical resource that will suffice as complement
for any Latin class: the Project on Curriculum Integration (PIC). Using them, the contents for any subject are approached in a unified way, without the traditional fragmentation of knowledge. Besides, learning is linked to the student’s immediate environment,
it is also assimilated through research papers, and it is connected to the job market when
using creativity and undertaking excersices.
We recognise the many advantages of this pedagogical approach and, for this reason,
we have carried out a Project on Curriculum Integration with the students of 1st of Bachillerato in Humanities and Social Sciences at IES Daute-Los Silos. Focusing on the
presence of Latin texts in the Canary Islands, we tackle a multipurpose investigation in
which contents and skills from different subjects (Spanish, English, History, Economy,
Scientific culture and Information and communications technology) will be mixed.
