The Deep Scattering Layer (DSL) is the largest biomass of the planet and constitutes an important trophic resource for many species of marine predators. However, the scarcity of data about the DSL impedes defining its ecological role. This study contributes to the knowledge of the DSL performing a pilot study of the abundance and diversity of organisms of the DSL off Tenerife and El Hierro (Canary Islands). For this we used a low-cost video system deployed up to 600 m depth from a 6m boat, Punta Ballena, of ULL. We performed 12 samples before and after sunset, covering the circadian migration of the DSL Images were analyzed with software MotionMeerkat for a semiautomatic detection of organisms, with visualizations to calibrate false positive and negative detections. We detected 971 organisms of meso and macrofauna, of which 29’15% could be identified taxonomically. Statistical tests did not show significant differences in the studied organisms of the mesopelagic community between seasons or between day and night periods. These results are consistent with previous results from fishing and suggest that is necessary to continue researching more exhaustive sampling methods to characterize adequately the DSL.en
