Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) are the cause of significant demand for pediatric care in the form of bronchitis, bronchiolitis and pneumonia. These epidemics are mainly caused by viruses, and follow a seasonal pattern each year. With the arrival of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in 2020 and the implementation of worldwide restrictive measures for its containment, this situation changes completely. In this study we wanted to analyze the impact of the pandemic in the Pediatrics Service of the University Hospital of Canary Islands (HUC). For this purpose, we have compared data on care pressure and infectious epidemiology of pediatric patients admitted to the HUC in two periods of time, before and during the pandemic. The most evident finding, and common to other parts of the world, is the decrease in emergency room visits and in the number of admissions to the ward. In addition, changes related to the prevalence of some viruses that have been observed in patients with LRTIs during the study period, a fact that could have great relevance in the behavior of seasonal epidemics in the coming years.en
