Deshumanización y prejuicios hacia la obesidad

Abstract

Cada vez se habla más en la sociedad occidental actual sobre el estigma, prejuicios y discriminación que sufren las personas con obesidad. Por esta razón, el objetivo de este estudio es confirmar que se deshumaniza, tanto implícita como explícitamente, a las personas obesas, así como estudiar otras formas de prejuicio hacia ellas. Para ello, se diseñó una investigación donde participaron un total de 32 participantes, con edades e índices de masa corporal muy variados. Para este estudio, se usaron 6 instrumentos principales: Escala de Actitudes hacia la obesidad, Escala Ascent of Human, Escala de infrahumanización, Medidas relativas el IMC, Escala de Intención conductual y Medidas relacionadas con datos sociodemográficos. Tras el análisis de los datos, concluimos que no ha habido una deshumanización significativa hacia las personas obesas, pero que sí se han encontrado ciertas formas de prejuicio y rechazo.

There is increasing talk in today's Western society about the stigma, prejudice and discrimination suffered by people with obesity. For this reason, the aim of this study is to confirm that obese people are dehumanized, both implicitly and explicitly, as well as to study other forms of prejudice towards them. For this purpose, a research study was designed in which a total of 32 participants, with very varied ages and body mass indexes, participated. In this study, 6 main instruments were used: Attitudes towards Obesity Scale, Ascent of Human Scale, Subhumanization Scale, Measures related to BMI, Behavioral Intention Scale and Measures related to sociodemographic data. After analyzing the data, we concluded that there was no significant dehumanization towards obese people, but that certain forms of prejudice and rejection were found.
