This research focuses on the evolution of unemployment benefits and unemployment rates in the
Spanish economy, as well as the relationship between these variables from a macroeconomic
perspective. Data from the Public Service of State Employment (SEPE) and the Statistics National
Institute (INE) during the period 2006-2021 are used to study whether the protection measures
against unemployment taken throughout the economic cycle have had the same effect on the
unemployment rate. Using descriptive and correlation analyses, the results confirm the stabilizing
role of unemployment benefits in a context of economic changes. In particular, the nature of the
crisis and the modalities of the protection measures carried out influence the trend of the
unemployment rate in the economy. In addition, the analysis by gender allows to detect significant
differences in the distribution of the type of unemployment benefits between men and women
throughout the economic cycle.
