Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are one of the most widely
used groups of drugs for analgesic purposes, and hence may be responsible for a high
percentage of adverse hypersensitivity reactions, whether they are immune-mediated.
The study of allergic reactions is difficult and involves the use of tests such as
controlled exposure to establish a definitive diagnosis.
In the population of the Canary Islands there are no studies that allow us to
know the prevalence of allergy to these drugs. This is the main objective of our
research work, in addition to being able to identify the NSAIDs most involved, the
clinical symptomatology manifested, the most used diagnostic method for confirmation
and the predisposing risk factors. To this end, we propose a descriptive, observational,
prospective, and cross-sectional study of all patients referred from primary care or
hospital emergency departments to the Allergology Department of the University
Hospital Complex of the Canary Islands (CHUC) and Nuestra Sra. de Candelaria
University Hospital (HUNSC) (Tenerife, Spain) with a suspected allergic drug reaction
to an NSAID during the period May 2022 - May 2023. A data sheet (9 items), which will
be completed for each patient and includes sociodemographic variables as well as
variables of interest for the study, will be used as a measurement instrument.
With this study, health professionals will be able to give visibility to an
increasingly frequent problem, highlighting the importance of its rapid communication to
health institutions, correct diagnosis, and treatment, as well as being able to carry out
health education work.
