a largo plazo.
Parents suffer a great deal of stress when their infants are admitted to Neonatal
Intensive Care Units. This is due to the baby´s health condition and the characteristics of
the hospital environment, the sounds from monitors, the situation they experience during
the stay and the baby´s aspect. All these factors produce a high stress level that can affect
the parental role and the relationship with the new-born and can have long-term physical
and psychologic consequences on the parents.
The present research project aims to measure the grade of stress in parents with
children admitted on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit from the Hospital Universitario
Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria and the Complejo Hospitalario Universitario de Canarias.
This study employs a quantitative methodology with a descriptive cross-sectional
design. The Parental Stressor Scale: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (PSS: NICU), validated
in several countries and languages, will be used to determine the level of parental stress.
The obtained results will provide us with information about the stress experienced
by parents in the NICU to create and apply interventions to reduce it, with the objective of
offering quality family care.
