Suicides are a serious health problem worldwide, leading the ranking of unnatural
deaths; however, data does not collect information about attempts, despite the fact that they
are 20 times more frequent than acts consumed.
One of the most used methods for suicide attempts is the drugs ingestion;
nevertheless, the proportion of the population that chooses this method is unknown, this is
the reason why we propose this Research Project in the canary population through a
descriptive, observational and retrospective study in the hospital setting of the island of
Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain), which will also allow us to identify the drug involved and
the predisposing factors.
Our population is made up of all the patients who came during 2021 to the
Emergency Services of the two referral hospitals on the island (CHUC and HUNSC), for
attempted suicide due to drug ingestion, and the sample consisted of those who attended
the HUNSC with this diagnosis and during this period of time (n=241 patients). As study
variables, socio-demographic and other data of interest should be pointed out, and as a
measurement instrument, a sheet that will collect all the variables extracted from the
DRAGO programme of the Canary Islands Health Service.
Knowing these data will allow us to observe this problem in the community of the
Canary Islands, it will also improve early detection at levels such as Primary Care, as well
as propose more specific treatments and health education programs aimed at its
prevention.
