Sexual health promotion makes references to interventions aimed at increasing knowledge, providing skills, and
improving the environment to achieve positive sexual health and wellness outcomes.
Young people use the Internet as one of the main sources to seek for information on sexuality, given the easy
access, privacy and the interactive nature it possesses. It has been proved that the implementation of website
programs may contribute to teenagers’ health improvements due to its huge popularity. As a result, the Internet
can be used as a proper tool for informing and promoting healthy sexual habits.
This experimental research study targets second year ESO students (ranging between twelve and thirteen years
old) from four public high-schools in San Cristóbal de La Laguna: IES Canarias Cabrera Pinto, IES La Laboral
de La Laguna, IES San Benito and IES Viera y Clavijo.
The main objective of this study is taking advantage of the creation of a website to use it as an useful resource, that might complement other programs or not, and promote it on different primary and secondary schools. This
site, named ESI (In-depth Sexual Education) can be used as a reliable source to address sexual health issues
on an attractive and interactive way.
The Project will last approximately for a year, being divided into three different stages. The first stage lasts three
months, investigating the influence of the internet on the sexual health of young people and their perceived
knowledge about sexuality through an initial survey. Moreover, we will analyze other apps and websites. On the
second stage (the next five months) we will designe our website. The remaining four months (3rd stage), will be
directed to the dissemination of the "ESI" website among the institutes already named, to carry out 60-minute
informative-training sessions during the school term, by their tutors and doing use of "ESI". After each session,
different surveys must be completed to evaluate the knowledge and to determine the effectivity about the
different interventions. We also include a final satisfaction survey to receive some feedback.
What we expect with the creation of the website "ESI (In-depth Sexual Education)” is to ensure that minority
groups feel included in sexual education, increase knowledge and erradicate misconceptions about sexuality. In
addition, it is intended to be able, as has happened with other online programs, to postpone the sexual debut of
young people, decrease the number of sexual partners and pregnancies during adolescence, prevent risky
sexual behaviors, promote the use of contraceptive methods and raise awareness of sexually transmitted
infections (STIs) in order to minimize them as well.
