dc.description.abstract | Biofilms are complex and structured communities of microorganisms embedded in a self-produced extracellular matrix. From a health point of view, biofilms pose a real challenge because their three-dimensional structure gives the bacteria that form them a high tolerance to adverse conditions, including generating resistance to antibiotics or to the immune system itself. For this reason, biofilms represent a problem of great clinical importance, where they have been related to nosocomial infections in patients with long-term catheters or prostheses. Bacteria that form biofilms on catheters include Staphylococcus epidermidis, an opportunistic pathogen that forms part of the normal commensal microbiota of our skin. This paper presents a retrospective study of some of the molecular aspects involved in the formation and development of biofilms produced by Staphylococcus epidermidis when it colonises catheters during long periods of time. In addition, a working hypothesis is proposed according to which, the production of specific antibodies against the surface proteins of the biofilm-producing bacteria could prevent the formation of biofilms on different types of catheters. | en |
