Nuevas terapias en la presión intraocular y su repercusión en el glaucoma

Abstract

El glaucoma tiene una alta incidencia en la población a nivel mundial, se caracteriza por una alta presión ocular debido a un fallo del drenaje del humor acuoso que daña las fibras del nervio óptico. Es una de las principales discapacidades visuales en el mundo. El tratamiento farmacológico consiste en la administración de agentes hipotensores por vía tópica oftálmica. Sin embargo, esta terapia tiene ciertas limitaciones como, por ejemplo, los efectos indeseables provocado por el propio conservante utilizado. Ante estos problemas, se están desarrollando nuevas terapias tecnológicas con el objetivo de que la sustancia activa alcance su lugar de acción a concentraciones adecuadas y por un mayor rango de tiempo. Estas nuevas estrategias, mejorarían la biodisponibilidad y la liberación progresiva del fármaco, lo que se traduciría en una mayor adherencia por parte del paciente y una mayor eficacia. En este estudio de revisión bibliográfica se expondrán diferentes terapias farmacológicas para el control de la presión intraocular en la enfermedad del glaucoma.

Glaucoma has a high incidence in the population worldwide, it is characterized by high ocular pressure due to a failure of aqueous humor drainage that damages the optic nerve fibers. It is one of the main visual disabilities in the world. Pharmacological treatment consists of topical ophthalmic administration of hypotensive agents. However, this therapy has certain limitations such as, for example, the undesirable effects caused by the preservative itself. In view of these problems, new technological therapies are being developed with the aim of ensuring that the active substance reaches its site of action at adequate concentrations and for a longer period of time. These new strategies would improve the bioavailability and progressive release of the drug, which would translate into greater adherence by the patient and greater efficacy. In this literature review study, different pharmacological therapies for intraocular pressure control in glaucoma disease will be presented.
