Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are molecules of a diverse nature that
destabilize the homeostasis of the endocrine system generating negative effects on human
health. These compounds range from pesticides, insecticides, plasticizers, heavy metals to
natural compounds such as phytoestrogens. Its main mode of action is through nuclear
receptors, its effect being amplified or not depending on the dose, the vulnerability of the target,
its state of development and even the association of several disruptors, among other factors.
This negative effect can happen immediately, throughout the life of the individual and even be
transmitted to offspring. By interfering with the endocrine system, EDCs can act on it directly
or affect problems such as reproductive disorders, neurological development and even influence
obesity and diabetes. In this review we will expose the most recent data on endocrine disruptors,
their main characteristics, and their effects on different pathologies, as well as possible
management strategies for the future.
