| es_ES |
dc.description.abstract | This paper considers the influence of social factors on the grammar of headlines in six sections of The Times newspaper (1970-90). Data obtained from an empirical study on the linguistic structures used in headlines are correlated with their field, mode and tenor of discourse, with the aim of exploring to what extent situational factors determine and influence the linguistic features used in this variety. The results obtained show how in headlines the relationship between form and social function is very obvious. Most of the typical grammatical features can be explained in connection with situational factors of their context of situation. In short, this article shows how in headlines “Form follows function; form follows the tool” (Edmund C. Arnold, 1981:51). The sections of the newspaper studied are: Front Page, Home News, The Arts, Sport, Business News and Letters to the Editor. | en_EN |
